“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.” ― Henry Ford
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. My favorite motivational speaker is Brian Tracy. I first know about Brian Tracy in Year 2012 after buying his book “Maximum Achievement” on Amazon. At first, I didn’t know that he is a motivational speaker and I was just trying to buy a book to learn how to achieve more in life.

These are my favorite quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt.
– “You must do the things you think you cannot do.”
– “No one can make you inferior without your consent.”
– “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. – You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.”
– “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.”
– “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”
– “Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962, was an American politician, diplomat, and activist. She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, having held the post from March 1933 to April 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms in office, and served as United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945 to 1952. President Harry S. Truman later called her the “First Lady of the World” in tribute to her human rights achievements.
I found a few great books from Eleanor Roosevelt on Amazon.
One of the most beloved figures of the twentieth century, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt remains a role model for a life well lived. At the age of seventy-six, Roosevelt penned this simple guide to living a fuller life. You Learn by Living is a powerful volume of enduring commonsense ideas and heartfelt values. Offering her own philosophy on living, Eleanor takes readers on a path to compassion, confidence, maturity, civic stewardship, and more. Her keys to a fulfilling life?
Learning to Learn
Fear—the Great Enemy
The Uses of Time
The Difficult Art of Maturity
Readjustment is Endless
Learning to Be Useful
The Right to Be an Individual
How to Get the Best Out of People
How Everyone Can Take Part in Politics
Learning to Be a Public Servant
Informed by her personal experiences as a daughter, wife, parent, and diplomat, this book is a window into Eleanor Roosevelt herself and a trove of timeless wisdom that resonates in any era.
A candid and insightful look at an era and a life through the eyes of one of the most remarkable Americans of the twentieth century, First Lady and humanitarian Eleanor Roosevelt.
The daughter of one of New York’s most influential families, niece of Theodore Roosevelt, and wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt witnessed some of the most remarkable decades in modern history, as America transitioned from the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, and the Depression to World War II and the Cold War.
A champion of the downtrodden, Eleanor drew on her experience and used her role as First Lady to help those in need. Intimately involved in her husband’s political life, from the governorship of New York to the White House, Eleanor would eventually become a powerful force of her own, heading women’s organizations and youth movements, and battling for consumer rights, civil rights, and improved housing. In the years after FDR’s death, this inspiring, controversial, and outspoken leader would become a U.N. Delegate, chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, a newspaper columnist, Democratic party activist, world-traveler, and diplomat devoted to the ideas of liberty and human rights.
This single volume biography brings her into focus through her own words, illuminating the vanished world she grew up, her life with her political husband, and the post-war years when she worked to broaden cooperation and understanding at home and abroad.
The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt includes 16 pages of black-and-white photos and an afterword by Eleanor Roosevelt’s granddaughter
As relevant and influential now as it was when first published in 1963, Tomorrow Is Now is Eleanor Roosevelt’s manifesto and her final effort to move America toward the community she hoped it would become. In bold, blunt prose, one of the greatest First Ladies of American history traces her country’s struggle to embrace democracy and presents her declaration against fear, timidity, complacency, and national arrogance. An open, unrestrained look into her mind and heart as well as a clarion call to action, Tomorrow Is Now is the work Eleanor Roosevelt willed herself to stay alive to finish writing. For this edition, former U.S. President Bill Clinton contributes a new foreword and Roosevelt historian Allida Black provides an authoritative introduction focusing on Eleanor Roosevelt’s diplomatic career.
“When you know what you want and you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to get it.”
– Jim Rohn
What are your goals? Have you written down your goals?
In the book What They Don’t Teach You in the Harvard Business School, Mark McCormack tells a study conducted on students in the 1979 Harvard MBA program. In that year, the students were asked, “Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all.
Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and the findings, while somewhat predictable, were nonetheless astonishing. The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together.
Goals provide us with a guiding purpose in life. Most successful people are goal- oriented and they know clearly what they want. You have to know what you want in order to get what you want.
S.M.A.R.T Goal Setting Technique
Your goals should have the following five characteristics :
Set clear and well defined goals based on WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHICH, WHY. E.g I need to increase my income by 20% by end of next year because I need to achieve more in life.
Include precise amounts, deadline, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success. It is easier to measure your goals if you put them in numeric terms.
Set goals that are possible to achieve. However, your goals should be realistic but yet challenging.
Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned with this, you’ll develop the focus you need to get ahead and remain in control of your life.
Time Bound (T)
Give each goal a deadline so that you have a sense of urgency in making it happen.
Set Various Categories Of Goals
By setting goals around various areas of your life, you will become a well- rounded person with a balanced lifestyle. You cannot use 18 hours of your day in pursuing your career goal while forgetting to spend some quality time with your family. We all have numbered days and it essential to spend your time wisely.
You have to read more to be a more successful person. By improving yourself, you can make yourself more valuable in your work life and in turn working towards achieving your career goal.
Eat more healthy food and sleep at least 7 hours a day. Make the habit of exercising twice a day. These seem simple but most people are not doing it due to busy work schedule. Being healthy, you have more energy to face your life challenges and never give up in the face of difficulties.
If you are an Entrepreneur, what can you do to improve your business and profit?
If you are holding a 9- 5 job, what can you do to increase your salary? How to improve your productivity by getting the most result in the shortest time frame possible?
Take the effort to improve your technical and soft skills. These are useful for your current and future jobs.
Do you want to buy a new house or new car?
What can you do to pay off your debt in a shorter time frame?
What should you invest in to have a higher rate of returns and never lose money?
How much money do you want to save to retire comfortably?
Plan a holiday trip with your family.
Are you spending enough time to communicate with your family and improve relationships?
Fun and Recreation
Get a new hobby for yourself. You may learn to play tennis so that you can have fun and keep yourself healthy at the same time. Learn to play piano if you don’t have a chance to do so while you are a kid.
Make the effort to meet up with your friends at least twice a month to catch up with one another. This helps to nurture better friendships.
After setting your goals, it is important to take actions to make it a reality. Make a plan and list all the things you need to do to achieve the goal. Taking actions require hard work and determination. Keep your eyes on your goals so that you can persevere till the end.
Review your goals regularly to find out your progress towards your goals. If you have achieved your goal, look for a new goal. Give yourself some reward for attaining a goal. This provides you with the motivation to achieve more goals. If you have made no progress, adjust your plan or hire a mentor to guide you. “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear — not absence of fear.”
– Mark Twain
Mark Twain is the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens who authored several novels, including two major classics of American literature: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He was also a riverboat pilot, journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur and inventor. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage—pleasantly, smilingly, non- apologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.”
